Freaky Eaters

I found a freaky program–Freaky Eaters. This has apparently been successful show both in UK and US. It’s not all about meat consumption: chips, cheese, chocolate, chicken, junk food, bread, pasta, diet coke, and so on, the manifestation of obsession varies. Let’s meet some meat or burger eaters.

VICTOR, A CHEESE BURGER ADDICT

For obvious reasons burgers are favorite entry level food for meat eaters: they are cheap, readily available, available for almost 24 hours in some countries. But we cannot shock every single one for change, can we?

DAVID, A CHIP ADDICT

David did not learn to eat anything but chips. Maybe he knows a lot better about potatoes and chips than we do. They vary in quality and in the way they were fried and stored, but so is everything we eat!

MICHAEL, A MEAT ADDICT

Michael has a compulsion for eating meat. And a lot of it. So much that his girlfriend is terrified that if help can’t be found, he’ll see the same fate as her late father. As a child he did not stop eating meat, and his parents have not at all pushed him for eating green.

The ultimate solution in this show seems to me “shocking participants” by showing either the grease intake, salt intake or a half year amount of the food each participant is addicted to. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t–for some it’s not that shocking. One thing for sure is that their childhood has a strong impact on their life-long food choices. Maybe meat is something anyone can learn to eat themselves, but vegetables are something to learn to eat. What do we do about this? How can we promote eating more vegetables in Finnish homes, especially those with children?
